on our way home from northern minnesota we spent a day at seed saver’s exchange in decorah, iowa. this place works to preserve heritage seeds for future generations to enjoy. they also have a herd of heirloom cattle, and flocks of heirloom chickens and geese. we spent the day exploring the farm that included the preservation gardens, the heirloom orchard and a beautiful forest trail.
these preservation gardens weren’t the eye candy of the farm, but this is where seeds are planted every ten years for the soul purpose of harvesting the seed. if these gardens did not exist, many species of flowers and veggies would be lost.
This orchard has hundreds of varieties of heirloom apples and grapes. They all had very cool names.
afternoon snack…wild blackberries
